A Message from the President of the
Parents Association 2008/2009
Dear Grace Families,
Wow… Another year gone by! I hope you have a
relaxing summer ahead of you. It, also, will go by too quickly! I
know it’s difficult to think of the next School year, but I wanted you to
have a sneak-peek at the calendar we’ve set for 2008-2009.
As many of you know, the
School relies heavily on the Parents Association (PA) and other sources to
support its operating budget. Tuition simply doesn’t cover it all.
The PA sponsors several fundraisers throughout the year which allows us to
donate a generous grant to the School’s operating budget each year, which
provides for field trips, technology upgrades, special programs and more.
Over and above this, we work hard to support our wonderful teachers and
staff, give back to the community, provide extras for our children, and
have some plain old-fashioned FUN!
In planning for next year,
we tried to focus on profits by streamlining our fundraisers and reduce
the burden on volunteers. While we don’t exist solely to fundraise,
it is a large part of our important work. Magazine subscriptions
have been added to Sally Foster in anticipation of boosting profits and
“Grace Grins”, black & white photo sales of your children, is something
new we hope will generate some excitement and extra money. For
variety, the Annual Gala has been moved to February and will be held in
our own Merrow Hall to save on expenses. (You will NOT recognize Merrow
Hall on Feb. 7th, 2009!)
Supporting outreach and
fostering a sense of community are also important PA goals. The Fall
Family Picnic, Halloween Party, Talent Show and End-of-the-Year Picnic are
activities the PA sponsors “just for fun.” The Carpenter’s Shelter
Dinners, coordinated by Beth Hamed, and our year-round outreach program,
headed by Carrie Garland, allow the PA to give back to the community.
Don’t forget: All PA events enrich our special School and every
child’s development and learning experience.
It’s going to be another
exciting year! Our group is small, but our work is BIG! We have
lots to accomplish. Get your calendars marked and let me know how
you’d like to help YOUR Parents Association.
Have a safe & wonderful
summer break!
Kim Griffin

THE PARENTS ASSOCIATION
The Parents Association, composed of class representatives from each
class (Room Parents), coordinates volunteer activities, assists the staff with Open
House and school-wide programs, and sponsors fundraising activities.
The Executive Board of the Parents Association provides leadership,
communications, and supports the school in may fundraising activities.
The Chairman of the Parents Association is appointed annually by the
School Board in accordance with the School's by-laws.
The Parents Association at Grace Episcopal School fosters camaraderie
among parents through fellowship at annual events such as the Summer Wine
and Cheese Party, the Fall Family Picnic, the "Grace Cup" Golf Tournament, the Halloween Party, and the Talent Show. (Please note that all children must be
accompanied by a supervising adult at all Parents Association events.)
Fundraising is another key function of the Parents Association, with
their annual "Grace Cup" golf tournament and the Gala/Auction raising substantial money for the school.
Outreach is yet another important role for the Parents Association. They
work on such worthwhile projects
as the Brown Bag Lunch Program, the Help the Homeless Walk, the Carpenter Shelter dinners,
the N Street Mission, and the
Easter Basket project for Goodwin House residents.
As a subcommittee of the Grace Episcopal School Board, the Parents
Association is the parents' liaison with the School Board. The Parents
Association encourages communications, and feedback/suggestions may be
made by directly contacting Parents Association officers and committee
members. The Parents Association meets regularly during the school year.
Please check the school calendar and the monthly newsletter for meeting notices.
